"The Uncreation" is the debut EP from one-man UK act Written in Torment, whose take on black metal is loaded with speed, precision, and quite a few twists and turns. Of course there are plenty of fast-paced power chords and rigid drum blasts with snarling screams mixed deep in against the instruments, as well as shifts towards those typically cold, winding midpaced riffs inspired by some of Norway's finest, but there's also a more technical edge displayed through runs that have a little bit of an Emperor-esque feel - perhaps even leaning somewhat towards "death metal" in a way. And in addition to all of this there are also a few nice clean passages and minor little dashes of tactful keyboards, not to mention a couple of excellent solos throughout the disc. While "precision" does play a role, though, things don't come across sounding mechanical, so there is a light sense of rawness present in one way or another. It's all quite impressive, really, as it sounds like the drums are played live, the songwriting is powerful, and the overall approach herein is certainly much more involved than that of many of the legions of other one-man black metal bands operating at the moment.

Inspired by bands such as Bal-Sagoth, Grand Belial's Key, Tsjuder, Abyssos, Mayhem, Throne of Ahaz, and Abigor.
