Well, this album came as a surprise. I’ve previously received crust and grind of various standards from FDA Rekotz, but to see a thrash metal album on the same label definitely came as a surprise. Vilefuck is a brand new name to me and this is their debut album, but since they’ve previously released five demos they should’ve had enough time to develop their sound and hone their skills. One can’t blame me for being the world’s biggest thrash metal fan, and there are only a handful of acts of the genre I regularly listen to (and none of them are Metallica, Slayer, Destruction, Kreator or any other big names like that), so I’m certainly not the best judge of character, but I’ll give it a shot.

One of the first things that strike me here are the lyrics as they’re deeply socio-political, not the most common thing in metal but I guess they’ve chosen the correct genre for their outlet. With their fast, energetic and aggressive front they literally spit out spiteful lyrical bits with great effect. The vocals are gnarly screams, just like one would expect from old school thrashing, but contrary to many similar acts the vocals don’t suck; it comes off as hectic, adrenaline-ridden and powerful. And I absolutely love the back-up screams. The riffing is pretty straight-forward most of the time; just classic speedy screechiness. But they throw in some minor flairs to light fires of excitement; may it be a short guitar solo, an unexpected tempo change or a melodic lead. While remaining quite firmly in the old school thrash swamp one detects death metal influences on occasions, and it all reeks of punk attitude of sorts. It doesn’t really get to the point of pure crossover, but the hardcore touch is there.

Best tracks on here would definitely be "The machine" for its unmerciful pounding; they’ve sped up the tempo, the drums are blasting and the outcome of it becomes incredibly powerful and brutal, but also "Invisible war" for its wickedly catchy groove (and also wicked blasting in the beginning). The faster tracks speak to me in more ways than the slower and groovier tracks do, but there’s not a bad track on here (eventhough I don’t get the need for the Interlude). A lot of energy, aggression and versatility makes "What lies ahead is already dead" come off as an absolutely terrific album. There’s only one flaw to be found, but unfortunately it’s a major one; the production is rather weak. The guitar sound is really thin, and it doesn’t let the music pack such a punch as it otherwise could’ve. But certainly worth checking out.
