Most recent album from blackened thrash maniacs, Thus Defiled. This is yet another ass-kicking album, from beginning to end, chocked full of neck-snappin' thrash riffs, blasting black metal parts, face-melting solos, and produced by the legendary James Murphy, this is everything a blackened thrash fan wants. Topped off nicely with an awesome Slayer cover, this is a blackened thrash album to have.

Written by Ellen Simpson [archaic-magazine]
I heard my (and their) first Thus Defiled album when I was merely 13 summers long in the tooth, but it isn’t simple rosy nostalgia which makes me think of this band as a bit of an institution. Formed in 1992, Thus Defiled have toured with and opened for any and every act worth its salt that has ventured onto our shores. Eschewing the security of a label in order to retain complete creative control, the band has nonetheless worked its way into the British metal consciousness with its noisy, blasphemous black metal racket. "Daemonspawn" is their fourth full-length, following on the tail of 2003’s impressively taut and bold "Weeping Holocaust Tears", and it can surely be said to take Thus Defiled’s sound to the next logical level.
The first thing to mention about "Daemonspawn" is that the production has been ratcheted up a few notches. Everything’s still gloriously brutal and distorted, but the sound is simply huge, a vindication of the four weeks the band spent sequestered in Texas perfecting it. The emphasis is on dirty intensity; "Genesis In Darkness" and "The Living Shadows of Sumeria" provide interesting, atmospheric moments to breathe, but for the main part, this album is an all-out aural assault of layered, roaring, razor-sharp guitars, relentless drums and Paul C’s signature screech. In the past he alternated between this raw black scream and a deep-as-hell’s-basement growl, which is largely relegated from this album. While the switch in dynamics is lost, the vitriol and passion Paul spits out with the former technique is something to behold, and maintaining it throughout the whole album works well. Sakis from Rotting Christ pitching in on Track 2 is a grim added bonus.
The drumming on this album is superb; check out the beginning of "…And They Shall Fear the Night" but watch the back of your skull while you do it, because it might end up on the floor. However, as always with this band, it’s the fretwork of Pauls C and F which provides the greatest service in the name of Satan. Stomping riffs, racing, twisting leads, and soaring, impossible solo trade-offs; all this in an unmistakably British black metal style, with surprising and refreshing inflections of thrash and even classic heavy metal. It’s an unholy, blackened joy to listen to, representing two musicians at the peak of their abilities. "Astaroth (The Art of Balance In Darkness)" is a highlight, with its catchy, nimble leadwork, crushing riffs and as many tempo changes as a drunken bus driver, but the whole album is stuffed with tasty bits.
"Daemonspawn" is louder, sharper and more diabolically arrogant than anything Thus Defiled have released before. The song structuring has extended, the complexity has multiplied and the whole album stares you in the face rudely and refuses to drop its burning, hateful gaze. If they haven’t made themselves known to you before, now is the perfect time to address your listening deficiencies and grab some of this perpetual British blackness.
