Superior Enlightenment is an extreme metal outfit featuring members of Magister Dixit, Utlagr & Fragments of Sentience. Somewhere between Keep of Kalessin and Zyklon, Superior Enlightenment is pushing the limits of brutality into the black metal genre. One of the best drum performances in Canadian extreme metal in 2009, Franky Blastbeat is literally outstanding. Combined with Ekinox' relentless and merciless double guitar assault, it constitutes a crushing piece of violence. Superior Enlightenment condemns the attitude of the governing class. The great obscurantism is a criticism of the ruling elite and their means to keep and increase their power. Supreme wealth is a sign of supreme depravity.

When you have some years listening metal music, unfortunately, there are less and less bands capable to surprise you, however how great is when some cool a band breaks this rule and show up with something impressive, original and devastating.

Well, that’s what just have happened to me while receiving the promo of this future cult band called Superior Enlightenment and their debut opus called "The Great Obscurantism" .

Five seconds after listening the first track and you say "wow these dudes have something really brutal and cool", and yes, the entire album is from that moment on, a continuous merciless campaign of ultra fast furious and technical Black/Death Metal.

I’ve heard that some voices comparing these dudes with polish cheesy Behemoth, but there is no comparison at all, first because Superior Enlightenment are Canadian, and second, Superior Enlightenment is much more technical and better musicians, if you get to know a little bit of music theory, you can feel different techniques specially in the guitars like 5th minus, harmonics etc…so even when at first sight, the whole thing sounds extremely brutal, the truth is that this is a very technical band combining glorious riffs with an incredibly fast drumming attack.

But lets continue, we are mentioning the use of different techniques to achieve exquisite riffs in guitars department, another area in which you can also confirm the "superiority" of this band is in the vocals, wow, they use ultra high black metal screams mixed with voices more into death metal style and then you can listen screams with clean voices that keep adding a very desperate feeling to the whole thing. Being Superior Enlightenment more into black metal, it’s remarkable the perfect use they make about some samples, something that is pretty common in death metal but not in black with the exception of Dark Funeral in their debut MCD.

So, let’s make a wrap up to summarize, Superior Enlightenment, a Canadian based act has just released their debut album called "The Great Obscurantism", the whole thing relies in an extreme form of Black Metal with influences of Death, with intricate fast but brutal killer riffs and devilish drums. Bands from Norway or Sweden or Poland, watch out, Superior Enlightenment are now serious candidates to the throne of brutal black death where Behemoth, Marduk, or Zyklon, have been ruling easily….but not anymore.
