I've never heard of this Californian band before, "Redwork" being my first exposure to SONS OF CHAOS ever, and I've to say I was definitely missing out. We can consider the album as the official debut for this hell-spawned trio, though the guys can also count a previously self-released CD as well as two demos in their back catalogue.

From the very first time "Redwork" started pumping right into my ears through the headphones, I got hooked right away. Asking for the reason? Well, these insane Deathsters come across to me as some great hybrid of brutal Death Metal mixed with a feel of the finest old-school Grindcore-mayhem. The overall sound is therefore outstanding, 'cos it doesn't take aback the typical extreme Metal-listener, but at the same time it's not outdated at all, resulting way fresh and invigorating. In short, SONS OF CHAOS don't reinvent the genre, but definitely add something to it. This aspect alone set the SONS apart from the plethora of underground Death Metal-bands trying to find their own way, and they are really deserving for the development of a proper sound.

The biggest role in the achievement of the band is played by the brilliant songwriting. Obviously having a penchant for intricate poly-rhythms and dissonant scales of sonic destruction, the band sets up a nearly perfect composition work. Maybe it can seem a bit chaotic (sorry for the sillier than a two bob watch pun) and hectic at times, but in my opinion this fuzzy factor is only due to the overall high quality of the musical offering. The point is you have to find it to properly appreciate the tracks on the whole, but once you get into, it'll blow your mind. It's like the sea; when you are watching it on a calm day, it seems a quiet, flat blue table, but if you think about the underwater world, you just realize there's a lot of activity going on under the waves. In fact, there's an impressive complexity underlying every track on there and some of the structures are even astonishing, pleasing the listener with unpredictable time changes and amazing breaks. Do you want an example? Check out the breaks around the 1:02 minute mark of "Thy Wounds Unveiled". Good stuff indeed.

The musicianship is just the icing on the cake for this album; this guys masterfully show their dexterity playing each and every instrumental passage with such an ease at times it's hard to realize. While listening, it can happen you just take notice and wonder: 'Holy shit! Was it really played that way?', the answer always being 'Yes, it was.' Especially the drumming is excellent, plump full with insane speed-beats and killer offbeat double-bass. There are no solos throughout the entire disc, and it's a somewhat unusual choice for a Death Metal-platter, but actually it works. I think the band has been going to mainly focus their abilities on the composition front, and I guess melting all the convoluted musical moments into such a cohesive work has been a quite hard task. By the way, they for sure delivered, this record being flaming good.

Bottom line: with "Redwork" SONS OF CHAOS have thrown down the gauntlet for the entire Death Metal-underground to challenge.
