Russian grindcore scene finally produced a band that can compete with its Western counterparts. It may be my skewed point of view, but it seems like for a long while this decade the only Russian-related, grind-oriented project that received at least some international exposure was an Israeli-Russian, one-man scat-grind band ABOSRANIE BOGOM. In the last couple of years more and more groups tried to follow suit, but quantity was not in a hurry to turn into quality. Until now, that is. Not that PURULENT JACUZZI breathe brand new life into that old grind thing. They play death/grind, to be precise, and work strictly within the limits of the genre. Now, within said limits of said genre "Stench Of The Drowned Carrion" does, in fact, come off as a high quality if unoriginal work. But given the genre's nature (i.e. its musical limitations and sheer quantity of the congregation), it is no mean fit by any stretch.

The band take tried and true formula and hone it diligently. They do not adhere to the modernistic strain of grind ala NASUM or PIG DESTROYER, but prefer to stick to the more traditional grind conceptions of gore hounds such as LAST DAYS OF HUMANITY coupled with additional over-the-top brutal death metal styling of bands like BRODEQUIN. That is not to say that musicianship here is primitive. That is also not to say that the band thrive on naked brutality alone. Well, actually they do, but with a little cherry on top. The band possess a somewhat modest perhaps but very presentable cache of buzz-saw grind chords and plastering death metal riffs at their disposal but utilize them all too well. Besides the expected but very well positioned rhythmic changes, breakdowns and plentiful grooves, the band disperse a good bit of short but imaginative guitar lines, licks and noises throughout the record, which do require at least a few serious technical chops, and which make it actually interesting to sit and pay attention as well as warrant repeated listens. Another thing that really stands out is the fluid, organic sound that is relatively rare in the grind circles. It may sound like a cliché, but every instrument, including treated vocals (which serve as another layer of sound), is well balanced and falls right into place. For music that is so condensed and bottom-heavy, this just might be an imperative asset. Not that early CARCASS or one of my favorites CATASEXUAL URGE MOTIVATION required it, but here it provides a needed jolt that helps kick the record into a higher gear. Dialogue movie samples are used freely but with some restraint, and predictable yet fully economical running time and track quantity is a good norm.

"Stench of the Drowned Carrion" fully supports a theory (and that goes for any metal genre) which states that it is better to hit the jackpot with something that was done before than attempting to be progressive and ultra-original and hoping to pull a peacock out of a sack instead of a dead cat. A very solid piece of gory death/grind this is. Recommended.
