Excellent death/grind! Brutal death metal in their roots exponented by hard, grind and thrash core parts made of guttural vocals, savage guitars and beating drums that are reminiscient of DYING FETUS and CRYPTOPSY. 8 (+1) songs, 100% sound and production = this release.

Another surprise package from the Czech Republic Sporting one of the most unreadable logos and weirdest names I’ve come across, Poppy Seed Grinder (P.S.G.) are a quartet of death metal/thrashers with an obvious love for all things Cannibal Corpse. The band in full flight are impressive, Floridian style death metal riffing, blistering drumming with great ‘old school’ thrash grooves thrown in for variation. An almost immediate sticking point was vocalist Petr’s low end delivery that, when it entered the ‘demonic animal noises’ phase, simply became a little too comical. Guitarists Yarda and Ondrej shred through some great death and thrash orientated riffing while drummer Bazin effortlessly double kicks, blasts and grooves his way through the tracks. Elimination Of Evil and Oppressed Reality kick things off, a familiar ‘Corpse’ riff style taking centre stage with grooving and stomping breakdowns peppered throughout. Delight From Suffering blasts out of the gates with an old school death metal tapping riff and some chugging thrash elements later on. Naked Mind thrashes out and relies on a chunky ‘Corpse’ riff in the verses. Sadistic Corporation sports some thrashier tempos whereas Rotting Processes In Human Mechanism opens with an ominous intro and then slays with the blast beat brutality meter cranked up to maximum. Think Of Death starts of with distant drumming and then takes off into the Floridian school of death metal realm for it’s three minute running time, ending with booming artillery explosion. The harmonic laced riffing of Bloody Psychotic Disease rounds out the listed tracks which, after around seven minutes of what sounds like a Biggest Loser contestant riding a rickety bike, gives way to what I assume could be a cover as it has no listing. Also not listed is a bass player, or even who played the bass on the album, though according to their Myspace page they have one now. Overall an enjoyable album that aside from the occasional ‘over the top’ vocal delivery had me nodding along to the fury. Yet another left field surprise from a relatively unknown band from a small label in the Czech Republic. Alas, not unlike Needful Things from the same label and country, P.S.G. would definitely have the goods with a bit of work although maybe not the opportunities or funds to crack markets outside of Europe. As this album was released in 2004 they now have new songs up their Myspace site, have new members and seem to be soldiering on. If you like your Floridian style death metal with a dose of hc/thrash groove and stomp then check out P.S.G. and you may be as surprised as I was.
