Just as crushingly heavy but not quite as keen on the balls-to-the-wall-blasting as fellow Canadian acts Cryptopsy and Kataklysm, Paroxysm aim to impress with their highly technical debut and, for the most part, they succeed. Let's get the complaints out of the way first: the drumming isn't on par with that of Paroxysm's aforementioned peers and, if there's one thing you expect from Canadian metal, it's fantastic percussion work (add Quo Vadis to the list for more evidence of that). Also, the first track is one of those atmospheric instrumentals that really doesn't need to exist. Usually, this can be forgiven, but, seeing as how "Revelation is Denied" clocks in at under twenty five minutes as it is...

Other than that, though, this release has got a lot going for it. It's technical without being too jarring, the riffs are always interesting and there's moments when the bass has a jazzy, Cryptopsy-esque feel to it. The melodic beginning of "Paroxysmic Rage" belies one of the album's most intricate songs, "Regime of Holy Terror" crushes listeners with the unpredictable shifts from lumbering to blasting speed, and "Mummified Principle" will catch you off guard mid-song when it takes an interesting new direction. "Revelation is Denied" is an enjoyable album and an impressive debut; it may not be long before Paroxysm's name is mentioned alongside Canada's more illustrious outfits.
