Interestingly enough, a few years back a close friend of mine online told me that I "had to hear this demo" from a black metal act out of France. After a few days of bugging me, I finally let him send it to me. What I got was 3 songs from a then one-man band called Obscurus Advocam whom played some incredibly dark satanic black metal. Now, after finally releasing a full-length album, I have received "Verbia Daemonicus" from Southern Lord Records via Battle Kommand Records. The first thing that you will notice about this particular release is the curious artwork found through the booklet and the back cover. Most black metal that I have heard of this style have vaguely minimalistic artwork, usually only being two pages thick. Here, we find intense digital art that also protects a great deal of the lyrics so that not quite everything can be read. I suppose this is a good start to the album, as assumptions reign in one's thought process when you're walking through the dark...

Now in 2007, Obscurus Advocam have become a 3 piece and are closely related to Glorior Belli, as Infestuus is still a member and Antarès once was. Interesting to also know that Antarès is a member of Blackgod whom are featured on the Stimmen aus der Tiefe #1 compilation that I have also reviewed for this 'zine volume. With an already impressive array of black metal outfits spanning the entire existence of the genre, France continues to deliver seemingly monthly another band that is well worth the effort in finding.

Verbia Daemonicus has been one punishing release, forcing out over 40 minutes of pure blackened insanity welcome to be the soundtrack of any number of the circles of hell itself. Filled with enough bloodlust to make even their monochrome-red French brothers Antaeus happy, Verbia Daemonicus pushes the listener into another level of dementia, forcing you to swim through the blood of everything you hold dear in a darkened universe. A universe without the light of suns but only the cold existence of being utterly alone with only the vast infinity of nothingness surrounding you. Unlike so many other black metal projects coming out of the seemingly chaotic rush of labels seeking to make money off of the current trend, Obscurus Advocam not only displays incredible amounts of talent and musicianship, but also push the boundaries of melodic guitar work in black metal itself to a more rock-oriented style, while most nowadays black metal can seemingly find itself sounding rooted close to punk. Everything about Verbia Daemonicus is nearly perfect. There just seems to be a small indescribable something lacking in the music. Regardless, this is an album for every black metal fan to support.
