After what seems like forever, Mummification has finally released their debut album, and it was definitely worth the wait. This four-piece from the unlikely metal hotbed of Willits, CA go straight for the jugular with simple, riff-laden death metal that is as catchy as it is brutal. With music rooted firmly in the Morbid Angel school and the kind of violent, gory lyrics normally associated with Cannibal Corpse, you might expect these guys to be a bunch of cabin-in-the-woods dwelling sociopaths.

But a song like “Gutter Dentistry,” with the lyric “forcing bedwetting pussies to suck concrete is a pastime of mine,” shows the band has a (twisted) sense of humor where you can almost envision them smirking their way through their live set. They even pay homage to the late Chuck Schuldiner and Death with an impressive rendition of the classic “Zombie Ritual.” In a time where many death metal bands are trying too hard to be innovative and genre-bending, it’s always good to hear a band like Mummification that isn’t afraid to play the music the way it was meant to be played.
