Review:
Written By: Alex [The Metal Observer]
I know MORGAIN since their 1997 tape album "In The Forest Of Weariness" and their Gothic/Doom Metal had been very catchy and also somewhat original back then as well as in the year 2003 with "Abandoned In The Forest Of Weariness (The Call Of Fairie)". It already is their fourth album and the previous album "Rhymes From The Forest Of Weariness (The Cry Of Fairy)" even convinced our professional point tightwad Thomas, so they have to be good, don’t they?
Musically the Slovaks stand somewhere between Gothic Rock, Gothic Metal and Doom Metal, much stamped by the use of a drum computer, which is not that positive, and the quite original vocals of Richard Zajac, who has a rough/melodic voice, which I haven’t really heard like that from anybody else, many will damn it, but I still like it.
"And Reality Hurts" sets out in Gothic Rock, with the original voice and some female vocals and right away we have established a general direction for this album, which MORGAIN mostly also stick to, just mixing it with Gothic Metal as well. But it is not only the usual that we get here, because the Slovak band also uses harmonica, accordion and violins, so they definitely try to stand apart from the rest.
„World Is Buried" breaks out of this direction, quite a bit faster, with double-bass and everything, right after "Dying" is a very nice ballad with accordion and harmonica, mostly sung by Slavka Tomanová. "Vampirian Blues" finally combines it all, altogether a bit faster than the average, but at times also reducing the song to acoustic guitars and keyboards, very interesting.
I already see tons of negative reviews rolling towards MORGAIN, mainly because of the kind of grainy voice of Richard Zajac, but somehow I like this pretty original atmosphere this septet builds up, because they manage to convey feelings, what not too many bands nowadays are able to.
