"Kings of Misery" is a no-nonsense old school black metal (with bits of death metal influences) release from Finland, featuring Werwolf in the drums (from SATANIC WARMASTER). The music sounds like a more (I know I'll be flamed for this) extreme black metal version of VENOM, CELTIC FROST etc. More importantly, it sounds like a demo tape: Very raw production, basic rhythms, and a guitar, a bass, drums & vocals that make this release sound as if it's a rehearsal tape. Old school lo-fi black death metal with coffin sound. Very dark and underground. Venom meets Hellhammer meets Deathstrike!!

"Kings of Misery" is the sophomore effort of Finland's proto-death machine, Incriminated. Formed in 1997 with the intent to pay homage to the rotting foundations of today's death metal, Incriminated looked to bands like Hellhammer, Venom, Master and Celtic Frost for inspiration and after recording a few demos and split CDs with Fulcrum Creak, Tuska and Blasphemous Evil, Incriminated finally settled down to record a proper debut. After the album's release, Incriminated inked a deal with From Beyond Productions and recorded their second album, "Kings of Misery."

The sound on "Kings of Misery" is one of simplistic, necrotic death metal, complete with grim production, croaking vocals and incredibly simplistic drums. Depending on your love for the early death bands, "Kings of Misery" will come off as either juvenile garage recordings or raw, putrid metal reeking with atmosphere. Songs like "Filth Hounds of Blasphemy" and "Tyrant, Usurper" rely on brutish speed and simple chugging to pummel, but "Possessed by Lycanthropy" and "Uninvited Guest" have more interesting riffs and song structures that are far more effective than the simpler approach. The highlight of the album is easily the epic 16-minute title track that plods along in full death/doom glory, pulling out some intriguing graveyard vibes that St. Vitus could have easily called their own. It's a great doom track and could prove a handy blueprint for future Incriminated compositions.

If you're only interested in huge productions, uber-technical riffing and thundering blastbeats, you'll find little to love about Incriminated. But if you admire the ancient architects of extreme metal or even have a soft spot for contemporary under-produced black metal, then "Kings of Misery" is worth a listen.
