So the eye of the Late-2000s financial crisis (2008 – still ravaging) that profusely bleeds the world over and over seems to have tightened its harrowing grip excessively tight around Greece’s neck, so tight that if Greece don’t get their act together, it might find itself being choke slammed violently into a state of bankruptcy accompanied by social collapse and widespread anarchy, scenes that Greece took a taster from back in 2011 and is still staggering to find its footing.

Enshrining this national mood that collectively must consist of feelings of disgust, betrayal, impotence and general sense of being trapped in the heavier and heavier downpour of a deluge is Thessaloniki’s hooded and menacing death metal brigands Head Cleaner and their 2012 provocative, what-the-fuck-are-well-doing-with-our-lives: Resistance, Determination and the Sheer Will to Overcome.

The overall rules of their musical engagement lurches over to a lightly restrained Napalm Deaths Time Waits for No Slave, placing great emphasis on urgent sections pressed in a very vocal bound emotional chaos reaching a distinct mess of angry, lost and misery while catchy riffs and drum tumbles keep the air of simple experimentation based intrigue. However as the album progresses the Time Waits For No Slave influence/connection seems to bleed out slowly and subtlety, instead substituted by a more demanding repertoire of death metal audacity and afflictions, occasionally toying with the more metal friendly ends of crust nastiness.

Vocals offer a nice range of techniques and are for a fair amount of their tracks quite audible, allowing the listener to really get into the mental element in play. Guitars serve well to create a malign strangeness to it all whilst rapidly jumping into full death metal servitude riffing, a parley that keeps a spark of unpredictability twined with a slight air of hostility that all make for some not too ambitious, but undeniably effective ground work. Drums general get the shit pounded out of them in systematic blasts with level of punishment often being defined by the taste in the air as polluted by the vocal-string assault. The only exception to the rule being the final track, where the hate turns to a whisper and the lingering stench of despair driven psychosis by way of atmospheric and ambient play styles drowning you in the spacious, but consuming misanthropy, they ooze out.

So if you fancy getting a neat slab of death metal corruption, squeezed in with the karmic bonus of alleviating Greece of its financial woes then this one fits the bill.
