Review:

It's taken fucking long enough for 'The Howling Damned' to surface but it has been worth the wait. Despite only a couple of "new" tracks appearing (more on that later), the 45-minute slab is as ruthless as it is essential. No time is wasted kicking things off, with 'Dead Kelly Rides Again' illustrating perfectly the immense, bass-heavy production, savage guitar tone and violent nature of the album. COOOOOOO-EEEEEE!!!

I'd wondered if Grenade would lose any of their menace with improved production, but they haven't. Increased clarity, and far more low end grunt have resulted in a sound more impacting than ever and the opening track proves to be a highlight. 'Headbangers From Hell' follows the galloping 8+ minute opener, continuing the depraved proceedings in slightly less memorable style though that's not to say it doesn't earn its place. I could rant and rave about 'Metal Of Death' (of which two versions appear), 'Hellsong', 'Carnivorous Lunar Activities' and 'Venom Of God', but I've done that in reviews of the 7"s. They're the same songs, with extra punch. Simply as that. The title track however, is previously unreleased and a bloody ripper. I almost choked on my drink when the keys (organs) kicked in around the minute mark, but they work surprisingly well with the twisted riffs, creating a track which emits a pungent Aussie stench. The brief track is packed with delicious riffs, fantastic vocals and one of the best intros I've heard in yonks.

So, it should be noted that this isn't the Grenade full-length we've been waiting on. If that will EVER see the light of day remains to be seen, but regardless of what the future holds, and whether or not you own either, or both of Grenade's 7"s and/or the Rehearsal tape, 'The Howling Damned' is an essential purchase. The opening and title tracks are worth the price of admission alone - as a full length, 'The Howling Damned' is one of the best releases of 2007.
