Review:

Ahhh ha, lots to like here. This is essentially melodic death metal for power metal nerds. I fall into that category, having been educated on Helloween, Gamma Ray, and Judas Priest, so ...As The World Crumbles is a great release to hear. Mixing speed metal riffs, bombastic power metal leads and solos, and a throaty death metal vocal delivery, FireBorn is definitely melodic death metal for a scene that seems to be lacking in that category as of late. Sure there are tons of At The Gates clones, but when is the last time you heard a neo-classic inspired melodeath band?

...As The World Crumbles is this Buffalo, New York band's response to Euro-melodic death bands like Kalmah, Children of Bodom, Norther, and In Flames. The band's style hits closest to Norther sans-keyboards, but definitely has elements of In Flames, Euro-power metal and Bay Area thrash as well. Since forming in 1999, these four guys (vocalist/bassist Adam Svenson, guitarists Scott Ketch and Matt Edwards, and drummer Matt Swistak) have been grinding it out, finally getting some recognition for ...As The World Crumbles. The album was released in Sept. 2005 on Oak Knoll Productions, and is now seeing US distribution through Century Media.

A good number of listens into this record, it's great to see some guys from the US creating a sound that is both familiar and unique at the same time, and doing it so well. That being said, ...As The World Crumbles does suffer from a few setbacks. The production sounds great, aside from occassional rhythms falling behind in the mix and a few sloppily (albeit lightning fast) played solos. It's great to actually be able to hear the bass guitar thumping and galloping along, and this record's got excellent production for being such a small budget release. The thing that does hinder its sound, though, is that most songs maintain roughly the same thrashy, fast speed and end up being almost undistinguishable. After about 5 or 6 listens through, songs are finally starting to feel seperate, though, proving there may be truth to that "there's no such thing as too much of a good thing" statement. Plenty of twin guitar harmonies, leads and throaty vocals from FireBorn will keep melodic death metal fans happy, myself included.
