Review:

This is a nice slab of technical brutality. Corpulate's debut album Boundless Expansion falls into that category of brutal death/grind albums that are able to deliver the intensity of the more chunky brutal death metal, while at the same time able to stay technical and solid in their musical writing, keeping their heads open to more diverse styles, and still staying close to their genre base. It has the intensity of a Malignancy record meeting the slower moments of brutal death metal and spiced with some Czech elements here or there.

The songwriting reminds me of Dripping's technical style of brutal death/grind: heavy as fuck, while never giving into the urge to get sloppy like Brodequin or other brutal bands. And like Dripping, Corpulate plays around with certain elements between their more conventional brutal songs. Corpulate, however, aren't nearly as risky as Dripping who went all out on the influences to sample on their abundantly titled full length Disintegration of Thought Patterns During a Synthetic Mind Traveling Bliss; Dripping threw in the entire kitchen sink, including KRS-One samples. Corpulate instead opts for a different influence in their experimentation, playing around with noise parts to occasionally segue between their brutal grind. The noise parts become reminiscent of Czech death/grind act Agony Conscience's full length Look into the Silence, a band that combined death/grind with industrial sound segues. Corpulate, however, are much more reserved in their noise parts than Agony Conscience was; Agony Conscience used their industrial effects too liberally, thus often becoming quite annoying. Corpulate realizes that brutal death/grind is the bread and butter of Boundless Expansion and merely keeps these more off-beat moments as an additional spice.

Vocally, the brutal grunting and guttural vocals are nothing to write home about, but the drumming is very solid, keeping as varied and as complex as the riffing. They compliment the guitar playing effectively and round out the record to make a strong debut. However, while I do credit Corpulate's reserve in their experimentation, there's still enough for someone to get their panties into a bunch about. Nonetheless, the inventive riffing and solid drumming are more than enough to make Boundless Expansion a solid offering. Corpulate have demonstrated themselves apt to craft a decent record, and I expect with time they may produce a very spectacular album. For now though, Boundless Expansion is definitely worth a go-around or two for people that want a little more variety in their brutal death/grind.
