Finnish metal rarely disappoints, and Corpset is no exception. Finally finding a home on Violent Journey Records, they've become able to re-release their demo, 'Ruins,' as their first full length album. For those not familiar with this band, they play pretty heavy death metal that is similar to The Crown and Red Harvest (minus the industrial bits), except maybe a bit more 'old school' The guitar sound is a bit fuzzier but the vocals just eviscerate and sound perfect for the music because they also have a throaty buzz to them as well. Lots of tracks like "The Light Divine" and "Into The Light" are focused on thick riffs tinged with the catchy groove of thrash metal interlaced with some pretty high pitched, but impressive solos. On the downside there isn't too much room for variation and progression in tracks like these as they tend to keep the same riffs over and over before the solo and then fall back to the same formula. Often the music is so chaotic though that nobody can really notice the repetitiveness; the vocals add plenty of variation in the growl tones as it is. Other tracks like "Give & Go" are more experimental and progressive. Instead of just charging in guitars-a-blaze, it starts out slow and foreboding with just the guitars having a much cleaner and ominous tone before the drums come in. Once everything is cohesively performing together, it sounds like a whole new band- almost along the lines of melodic death metal or groove metal, but eventually everything becomes chaotic again like before. However, one key thing to note is the riffs have a more death n' roll style to them and go at a much leisurely pace. The vocals also have a whispering grated tone that helps the track stand out as well. "World Hate Center" is a bit more technical in its work, but still fuzzy in the atmosphere tone so it doesn't feel out of place on the album. "V.P.O" is brutally energetic right before the closing "Caesar's Palace" which tends to synthesize everything together- from the melodic bits to the thrash to the death metal (there are even some clean vocals layered in the mix). As a result, this album should sit well with lots of varied death metal fans. The music is violently powerful and knows how to lay down the heaviness but also the right melodies so it doesn't feel like a one sided show the entire listen through. For those who were lucky enough to get this original demo when it was self released means that the full length release won't have any difference, but for new fans who haven't had the opportunity, this should be a welcome addition to their collection now that the music can be widespread more easily.
