"Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses", to me, is the absolute pinnacle of grind. This might have come out late compared to other classic grindcore albums, but this is still the best. Absolutely untouchable as far as death/grind goes. The combination of excellent production and great musicianship made this landmark in brutality. For an early 90's extreme metal release, the production on here is spectacular. The guitar has a huge crunch to it, and the bass is very thick, heavy, and audible. The drums and vocals sound very good, but not to the point where they overpower the guitar.
As mentioned earlier, the musicianship is great on this album. A mixture of 100 miles per hour, full on speed and slow, heavy, groovy-as-fuck moments help provide the grindy excellence. I think the best example of this would be "Time". The beginning is all-out speed and blastbeats, and then it slows down for a while, laying down some crunchy and catchy fuckin' riffs. Then, it speeds up again and we get more blastbeat goodness before it slows down again and fades out. This blasting fury and mid-tempo/slowdown time are equally spread across many of the songs. "Ill Neglect" and "Walking Corpse" are very fast and extremely fun to listen to while "Denial of Existence" and "Unjust Compromise" aren't as fast, but still very catchy. The whole album is like this. Brutal Truth are a groovy band done right.
All four members of Brutal Truth at this time were great in the recording of this album. Kevin Sharp's vocals were the most intense they would ever be on a Brutal Truth recording, either incorporating a great guttural growl or an ear-piercing shriek. Scott Lewis is excellent on drums. He performs some of the fastest blastbeats I've ever heard on songs like "Stench of Profit" and "Regression-Progression". They fit perfectly with the aggressive vocals and guitars. Again, Brent McCarty provides great riffs on each song, making every one of the memorable. He even performs a fast as hell solo on "Birth of Ignorance". And Danny Lilker's bass has the perfect tone, where it's at the perfect volume to hear and to add to the music. Even the non-songs on here are good. "PSPI" serves as a good intro to the one of the best grind songs of all time, "Birth of Ignorance". Both "Collateral Damage" and "Blockhead" serve as reminders of Scott Lewis's pure speed and Kevin Sharp's insane vocal style.
Like other grind bands, Brutal Truth's lyrics are on the more socially aware side. I give them credit for writing lyrics like that when shit bands like Pantera were around writing meat-head anthems like "Walk" and other such bullshit. Brutal Truth were easily one of the truest metal bands of the early 90's. This is a definite purchase. The only downside to this incredible album though, is that all of Brutal Truth's other material seems very lackluster compared to this one. They totally spoiled me with this amazing work of art.
Highlights: Just about everything. My personal favorites are "Birth of Ignorance", "Stench of Profit", "Time", and "Wilt".
