Any avid follower of black metal will no doubt be aware of the quality and quantity of bands that have spawned from South American scene over the years. Mostly noted for their typically barbaric approach to this music it is refreshing to hear a band progressing into, well, more progressive realms, as is the case with Chilean horde Animus Mortis. Signed to the ever reliable Debemur Morti Productions the band have just gotten around to releasing their debut full length entitled "Atrabilis (Residues From Verb & Flesh)", an album that brings both traditional and non-traditional aspects together in a spellbinding display of total black metal majesty.

Whereas their early demo material (released in 2004) displayed the respective immaturity of a band still choking on the bile of their influences, "Atrabilis (Residues From Verb & Flesh)" thankfully sees these Chileans taking a much more mature approach to their song writing. Although it’s still obvious that they take huge influence from "In The Nightside Eclipse" era Emperor and Enslaved, Animus Mortis have managed to carve a deep and dark abyss that harnesses both black metal’s more aggressive edge and the wintry atmospherics of their early 90’s Norwegian counterparts. Swathed in thick layers of ethereal guitar work tracks like "Hoasannas From The Depths" and "Among The Phlegm Of God" show just how much they have improved in the song writing department, one minute blasting you into black oblivion and the next burying you in walls of evocative metallic ambiance.

Careful not to fly too far up its own arse as many of these atmospheric/progressive black metal bands generally do "Atrabilis (Residues From Verb & Flesh)" manages to conjure a controlled black storm that is as much about quality song writing as it is anything else. A sublime and ultimately superb debut, then, from a band that you need to get to know.
