The stupidly titled Forest Paranoid by the even more stupidly named Aanal Beehemoth is an amusing, psychedelic mix of crusty black metal and punk rock, something like Kaaos, Rattus and Bathory tossed into a blender and sprinkled with crack. I guess it's not really "out there" enough to vindicate the band's tongue-in-cheek self-description of "100% ultra misery blackout metal nekropunk psykosound," but gimmicks aren't the point. Riffs consist of your average bobbing crust punk material with a minority of tremolo picked parts that only whisper black metal, generally assembled from a simple palette of propulsive palm-muted chords and wah-wahs; a sense of juvenile energy is sustained throughout the span of the album and it didn't once lose my attention, so despite its spontaneous atmosphere, compositional quality control seems to be a factor to the band.

Black metal/gutter punk hybrids are a dime a dozen these days, but what I really appreciate about this duo is that they possess a sense of playfulness that the genres their music dips into have long since lost; a lush, shamanistic folk ambience bookends the album, songs frequently splinter into squiggly psychedelic breaks, and the absurdist dialogue of wailing lead guitar pyrotechnics & rubbery bass sparks off the rudimentarily violent rhythmic resolution of the riffs with improvised frenzy. Their name would lead you to believe that they're an Impaled Northern Moonforest-esque parody band, and they probably are, but Aanal Beehemoth have nonetheless figured out a way to melt in and out of microcosmic jam sessions without self-indulgence or much irony from a framework as binary as punk rock.

The album's analog production sounds a bit too acoustic and distant for its own good, only benefiting the creeping atmospheric bits; however, guitar tone is not sacrificed, possessing a crunching buzzsaw low end.

Petulant, abject idiocy comprises Aanal Beehemoth's lyrical content, as one might gather from song titles like "Kill For Money" and "Witch Hunt.........." (their English major suicide-inducingly long ellipsis, not mine). This is only rendered enough of an issue to warrant mention by the fact that while heavily accented, the vocals--from the lead singer's gruff croak, to clean backing yelps--are usually rather comprehensible, and I'd like more wit from a band like this and less illiterate "SUCK SATAN'S COOOOOOCK" necropunk shtick. Can't win 'em all, I guess.

So, Forest Paranoid isn't perfect, but it's about as good as retarded forest punk gets, and it's free (or only like five bucks if you wanna buy it), so let these idiot savants be the first band to whom I reward a score of 10. If you don't like it, why don't you go post a thread about it on an internet forum or something.
